Hermes import agent is the one-command way to move into Hermes Agent without starting from scratch. hermes import-agent copies your setup from OpenClaw, Claude Code, Codex CLI or — new in v0.22.4 on 21 October 2026 — Cursor. It brings over your memories, rules, skills and MCP servers. In the video below I show how my Agent OS gives all my agents one shared memory, which is what this command helps you build. Here’s exactly what gets imported and how to do it safely.

Key takeaways

  • hermes import-agent imports from OpenClaw, Claude Code, Codex CLI and Cursor.
  • Memories, rules, skills and MCP servers come across; keys stay behind by default.
  • It previews first and asks before changing anything.
  • --sync keeps Hermes up to date when the old agent changes. Claim a free strategy session for help.

What Hermes import agent does

The agent-importers plugin adds the hermes import-agent command. It reads the setup folder of another agent and writes the useful parts into your active Hermes profile. It always shows you a preview first and asks before applying anything.

Import from Folder it reads
OpenClaw ~/.openclaw (or the older ~/.clawdbot and ~/.moltbot)
Claude Code ~/.claude
Codex CLI ~/.codex
Cursor ~/.cursor (new in v1.1.0, shipped with Hermes v0.22.4)

It used to be built into Hermes core. Now it’s an official plugin, and hermes setup offers to install it when it spots one of these agents on your machine.

Importing from Claude Code, Codex or Cursor

  • Instructions, Cursor rules and memories become Hermes memory entries.
  • Bash permission rules become Hermes command allow and deny lists.
  • MCP servers are added to Hermes’ config.yaml.
  • Skills are copied across.
  • --sync re-imports any source that has changed since last time.

That last one is handy if you keep using Claude Code or Cursor for coding: Hermes stays in step with the rules and memories you build there.

Migrating from OpenClaw to Hermes

For OpenClaw, the importer is the former hermes claw migrate command. It brings over your persona, memories, skills, model and messaging settings, MCP servers and agent behaviour — including workspace files like SOUL.md, MEMORY.md and USER.md.

  • API keys and bot tokens only come across if you add --migrate-secrets, and the preview lists which ones.
  • It creates a restore point (a pre-migration zip) and a migration report with backups.
  • It warns you if OpenClaw or a Hermes gateway is still running.
  • hermes claw cleanup renames your old OpenClaw folder after you confirm, so nothing is deleted.

Weighing up the switch? Read my Hermes Agent vs OpenClaw comparison first.

Is Hermes import agent safe?

Nous’s own notes on the plugin are reassuring. The importer makes no network calls and no model calls, so nothing leaves your machine. For Claude Code, Codex and Cursor it never reads their credential files, and it strips and lists any secret-looking MCP environment variables and headers. It writes only into your active Hermes profile, and it backs up your memory file before changing it.

Still review the preview carefully. Permission rules and MCP servers change what Hermes can do, so check you’re happy with every allow rule before you approve.

How to use Hermes import agent

  • Update Hermes: hermes update (the plugin needs Hermes v0.21.6+; Cursor support came with v0.22.4).
  • Install the plugin if hermes setup hasn’t already: hermes plugins install agent-importers.
  • Run hermes import-agent and read the preview.
  • Approve, then ask Hermes “what do you remember about me?” to check the import worked.
  • Add --sync later to pull in new changes.

Or skip the terminal: ask Hermes “import my Claude Code setup and show me the preview first”.

Why this matters for your business

Most people don’t switch agents because rebuilding everything is painful — months of rules, memories and skills are locked inside one tool. Hermes import agent removes that cost. You can try Hermes with everything you’ve already taught your other agents, and keep using both.

That’s the idea behind my Agent OS: use the best agent for each job, but give them one shared memory and one set of skills.

What doesn’t get imported

It helps to know the gaps before you switch:

  • Credentials from Claude Code, Codex and Cursor — never read, so log Hermes in to your providers yourself (Hermes can borrow Codex CLI and Claude Code logins).
  • OpenClaw keys and bot tokens — only with –migrate-secrets, and only allowlisted names.
  • Secret-looking MCP env vars and headers — stripped and listed so you can re-add them.
  • Your chat history — the importer moves setup, memories and skills, not old conversations.

Plan five minutes after the import to reconnect accounts and re-add any stripped secrets, and you’re done.

My verdict on Hermes import agent

It’s careful, previews everything and keeps backups. It also finally makes moving to Hermes painless for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and OpenClaw users. If you’ve been putting off trying Hermes because of setup, run Hermes import agent and you’ll be up and running in minutes.

What does Hermes import from Cursor?

Cursor rules and memories become Hermes memory entries; MCP servers, skills and permission rules come across too. Cursor support arrived with v0.22.4.
