Hermes Agent usage limits changed on 27 October 2026. Nous Research announced on X that it had revamped Hermes Agent subscriptions: every new plan now includes a cloud agent, and usage has daily and weekly limits instead of one monthly block of credits. Below I explain what that means for you, how to check exactly where you stand with /usage, how limits work when you sign in with ChatGPT or Claude instead, and what Hermes does when a limit runs out, using the Hermes docs as the source. I’ve also added my video on Hermes Cloud below.

Key takeaways

  • New Nous plans: daily + weekly limits, plus a cloud agent on every new plan.
  • Check your limits any time with /usage (or hermes usage outside a chat).
  • /subscription shows your plan; /topup shows your balance.
  • When a limit runs out, Hermes can switch to a fallback model and park scheduled jobs.

What changed with Hermes Agent usage limits

Before the revamp, a Hermes subscription worked like a monthly allowance: one block of credits that you used up over the month. If you had a heavy week early on, you could run dry long before the month ended.

The new plans split usage into daily and weekly limits. In practice, that spreads your usage across the month, so one busy day can’t burn the whole allowance. And every new plan now comes with a cloud agent included, so you can have a Hermes running 24/7 without setting up your own server.

Nous says existing subscribers can switch to the new plans at any time from the Nous Portal billing page. Hermes v0.22.5 (22 October) added support for these window-based plans in the app: plan gauges, limit cards, and recovery when you switch models after hitting a limit.

How to check your Hermes usage limits

You don’t have to guess. Hermes gives you several ways to see where you stand:

Command Where What it shows
/usage Any chat (CLI, Desktop, Telegram, Discord…) Token use, cost breakdown, context window and, when your provider supports it, an Account limits section with remaining quota, credits or plan usage
hermes usage Your terminal, no chat needed The same account-limits block, ready for scripts (add –json)
/subscription CLI Your Nous plan, with a link to change it in the browser
/topup CLI and messaging Your Nous balance and billing on the portal (replaces the old /credits and /billing)
/insights Any chat Usage patterns over the last 30 days

Hermes also shows Nous credits notices in the status bar, such as usage bands and when a grant is spent. If they bother you, set display.credits_notices: false in config.yaml; /usage still works.

Hermes usage limits when you sign in with ChatGPT or Claude

Not everyone uses a Nous plan. The providers page explains what each subscription actually pays for, and it’s the most common source of billing surprises:

  • ChatGPT / Codex sign-in: /usage shows your Codex 5-hour and weekly windows. If you have usage-limit resets banked on your ChatGPT account, /usage reset redeems one and fully restores both limits. Hermes refuses while your limits aren’t used up, because spending a reset early wastes it; /usage reset --force overrides that.
  • Claude Max sign-in: Hermes only works through the OAuth path on a Max plan with extra usage credits bought on top. Hermes uses those extra credits, not the base Max allowance. Claude Pro can’t use this path; you’d use an API key instead.
  • OpenRouter: hermes usage --provider openrouter shows your credits.

If you’d rather not track five different rules, the docs point to Nous Portal: 300+ models under one subscription and one login.

What happens when you hit a Hermes usage limit

This is where Hermes is smarter than most agents. When a provider says your limit is reached and tells Hermes when it resets, Hermes uses that information instead of retrying blindly:

  • Fallback models: if you’ve set a fallback, Hermes moves to it and stays there until the reset time passes, instead of bouncing back and forth every turn.
  • Scheduled jobs get parked: if a cron job’s provider reports its limit used up and every fallback is unavailable, the scheduler holds the job until the window reopens. You get one alert saying the job is held, not an alert every few minutes.
  • Switching models: since v0.22.5, Hermes recovers when you switch to another model after hitting a plan limit.

The simple takeaway: set at least one fallback model, and your agent keeps working even on a day you’ve used up your main plan.

How to make your Hermes usage last longer

Most usage goes on tokens, so the fixes are about sending fewer of them. These come straight from the docs’ tips:

  • Run /compress during long sessions. It summarises the history and cuts the tokens sent on every turn.
  • Use /context to see what’s filling the window: system prompt, tools, skills, memory or the chat itself.
  • Run hermes prompt-size to see the fixed cost of every message before you even start.
  • Send side jobs like image description and web summaries to a cheaper auxiliary model, instead of your main one.
  • Start a fresh session with /new when you change topic.

Or just ask your agent: “Check my /usage, tell me what’s using the most tokens, and set up a fallback model so I don’t get stuck when I hit my limit.”

Is the new plan better for you?

If your usage is steady, daily and weekly limits mean you’re far less likely to be locked out at the end of the month. If you work in bursts, such as one huge project day a week, the daily cap matters more, so watch /usage on those days and keep a fallback model ready.

Either way, the included cloud agent is the bigger change. It means a Hermes that keeps working while your laptop is closed, without paying for and managing a separate server.

My verdict

The revamp makes Hermes usage easier to plan: limits that reset daily and weekly, a cloud agent on every new plan, and clear tools to see where you stand. Check /usage, set a fallback model, and you’ll rarely notice the caps. That’s everything you need to know about Hermes Agent usage limits right now.

FAQ: hermes agent usage limits

What are the Hermes Agent usage limits?

Since Nous revamped Hermes Agent subscriptions on 27 October 2026, new plans have daily and weekly usage limits instead of one monthly block of credits, and every new plan includes a cloud agent.

How do I check my Hermes usage?

Type /usage in any Hermes chat. When your provider supports it, it includes an Account limits section with your remaining quota or credits. Outside a chat, run hermes usage in your terminal.

Can I switch my existing plan to the new limits?

Yes. Nous says subscribers can switch to the new plans at any time from portal.nousresearch.com/billing.

What happens when I hit my Hermes limit?

Hermes can move to a fallback model until the limit resets, and scheduled cron jobs are held until the window reopens instead of failing over and over.

Does Hermes use my Claude Max allowance?

No. With Claude Max OAuth, Hermes only uses the extra usage credits you’ve bought on top of Max, never the base allowance. Claude Pro can’t use this path at all.

How do I reset my Codex limit in Hermes?

If you have resets banked on your ChatGPT account, /usage reset redeems one and restores your 5-hour and weekly limits. Hermes refuses until your limits are used up unless you add –force.
