Hermes rewind is the new way to undo a wrong turn in a Hermes Agent chat. It shipped in v0.23.0, “The Hearth Release” on 5 November 2026: type /rewind or press Esc twice, pick an earlier message, then edit and resend it or fork a new session from that point. Forking leaves your original session exactly as it was. Below is how it works, when to edit versus fork, and the new “tell Hermes what to do instead” option that shipped with it. My video is right under this intro.
Key takeaways
- Type
/rewind, or press Esc twice while the prompt is idle and empty. - Pick an earlier message, then edit and resend it, or fork a new session from just before it.
- Fork to keep the original session untouched; edit-and-resend cuts the chat back to that message.
- Works in the TUI and the classic CLI.

What Hermes rewind does
Long agent chats go wrong in small ways: a vague prompt, a wrong file, a step you wish you’d phrased differently. Before, you either argued with the agent or started over. The v0.23.0 release notes describe the fix: /rewind lists your earlier messages so you can go back to one.
From there you have two choices:
- Edit and resend the earlier message, so the chat continues from your better prompt.
- Fork a new session from just before that message, so you can try a different path.
The difference matters: the release notes say a fork leaves the original session exactly as it was, while edit-and-resend cuts the chat back to just before the message you picked when you send it, the same soft delete /undo uses.
How to rewind a Hermes chat
- Open the TUI or the classic CLI.
- Type
/rewind, or press Esc twice while the prompt is empty. - Pick the message you want to go back to from the list.
- Edit it and send, or choose to fork a new session from there.
Update first so you have it: hermes update for the CLI, or the Microsoft Store for the Store app.

Edit and resend vs fork
| Choose | When it fits |
|---|---|
| Edit and resend | The earlier prompt was wrong or unclear, and you want one clean thread. The chat is cut back to that message. |
| Fork a new session | You want to keep the first attempt untouched and try a second approach side by side. |
A simple rule: edit when you’re fixing a mistake, fork when you’re comparing options.
The new “tell Hermes instead” option
The same pull request added a choice to approval prompts: “No, and tell Hermes what to do instead”. When the agent asks to run a command you don’t want, you can deny it and give a correction in one step, instead of denying and then typing a new message.
Paired with rewind, that covers both kinds of mistakes: a bad prompt (rewind it) and a bad next step (deny it and redirect).
Start a new chat without stopping the old one
Another TUI change in the same release: /new while Hermes is busy opens a fresh session and keeps the running one working in the background. Ctrl+X switches back to it.
So you can rewind or fork one chat while a long job keeps going in another.

Where rewind works today
The /rewind command and the Esc Esc picker are terminal features: the TUI and the classic CLI. The pull request notes that Desktop already has edit-and-resend for rewinding. Messaging-platform rewind is deferred, so on Telegram, Slack and the other chat apps you still correct the agent by sending a new message. The new tell-instead approval option is also terminal-only for now.
Because every surface now attaches to one gateway that owns the session, a chat you rewind in the terminal is the same chat everywhere else.
My verdict
Rewind is the small feature you’ll use every day. Update Hermes, press Esc twice the next time a prompt goes sideways, and fork when you want to test two approaches. That’s the whole point of Hermes rewind.

FAQ: hermes rewind
What is Hermes rewind?
It is a Hermes Agent feature that lets you jump back to an earlier message in a chat, then edit and resend it or fork a new session from that point. It shipped in v0.23.0 on 5 November 2026.
How do I rewind in Hermes?
Type /rewind, or press Esc twice on an empty prompt, in the TUI or classic CLI. Pick an earlier message from the list, then edit it or fork from there.
Does rewinding delete my original chat?
Forking does not: the original session stays exactly as it was. Edit-and-resend cuts the chat back to the message you picked, so fork if you want to keep the first attempt.
What is the difference between editing and forking?
Editing resends a corrected version of the earlier message and cuts the chat back to that point. Forking starts a new session from just before that message, so you can keep both attempts.
Does Hermes rewind work in Telegram or Slack?
Not yet. /rewind and Esc Esc work in the TUI and classic CLI, and Desktop already has edit-and-resend; messaging-platform rewind is listed as deferred in the pull request.
What does ‘No, and tell Hermes what to do instead’ do?
It is a new approval option: you deny a tool call and give a correction in one step, so Hermes changes course instead of just stopping.
