Hermes vs Manus is a choice between two kinds of AI agent. Hermes Agent is Nous Research’s open-source agent that you install on your own machine or server. Manus is a hosted agent that its own docs describe as a virtual colleague with its own computer. Everything below comes from the Hermes docs, the Hermes v0.23.0 release and the Manus docs. My video is right under this intro.
Key takeaways
- Hermes: open source (MIT), runs where you install it, with any model provider.
- Manus: hosted, works in a cloud sandbox with internet, files and a browser.
- Both have skills, scheduled work and email-triggered tasks.
- Pick Hermes for control and self-hosting, Manus for a ready-made hosted agent.

What each one is
Hermes Agent is open source under the MIT licence. You install it, connect a model provider, and it runs in your terminal, the Desktop app, a browser Webapp and messaging apps. It keeps memory between sessions and learns skills as it works.
Manus describes itself as an autonomous general AI agent. Per the welcome page, it works in a complete sandbox: a virtual computer with internet access, a persistent file system and the ability to install software. The Manus site currently leads with Manus 2.0.
Where the work runs
Hermes runs where you put it. The terminal backend docs list local, Docker, SSH, Modal, Daytona and Vercel Sandbox backends, with more from plugins, so commands can run on your laptop, a server or a cloud sandbox you choose.
Manus runs in its own cloud by default. Manus Studio, its desktop app for macOS and Windows, adds My Computer, so Manus can work with your local files, terminal and apps, with a permission mode deciding which actions need approval.

Models and keys
Hermes is model-agnostic: you bring the provider and the key, and swap models whenever you like.
Manus runs its own models by default. Manus Flex, which its docs mark as beta, lets you plug in your own API key from a supported inference provider while Manus still plans and runs the task.
Research, browsing and big jobs
Hermes has web search and extraction tools, a browser, and delegation to hand pieces of a job to subagents. The Kanban board lets several Hermes profiles share one task list.
Manus has a Cloud Browser you can sign into, and Wide Research, which splits a job across many parallel agents, each with its own context, then assembles the results.
Skills, schedules and email
Both use skills. Hermes stores skills in ~/.hermes/skills/ in the agentskills.io format. Manus Skills can be built from a task, uploaded or imported from GitHub.
For repeat work, Hermes has cron jobs that deliver to chat, files or another platform. For email, Hermes has a full email gateway; Mail Manus gives you a bot address you forward emails to, and only pre-approved senders can trigger tasks.

Apps and integrations
Hermes connects through messaging gateways (Slack, Teams, WhatsApp, Telegram and more), MCP servers and plugins. The v0.23.0 release added Group Chats with a lead bot or router.
Manus has connectors for apps such as Gmail, Notion, Slack and GitHub, plus MCP connectors, and Projects that keep shared instructions and files for recurring work.
Control and safety
With Hermes, the data and the agent sit on hardware you control. The security docs cover allowlists, DM pairing and approval for dangerous commands, and sandboxed backends keep commands away from your main system.
With Manus, the work happens in Manus’s cloud sandbox, and on your own computer only through Studio’s permission modes. That’s simpler to start, but your tasks run on someone else’s infrastructure.
My verdict
If you want an agent you own, can self-host and can point at any model, pick Hermes. If you want a hosted agent that already has a cloud computer, a browser and connectors, and you don’t want to run a server, Manus is the faster start. That’s the honest answer to Hermes vs Manus.
