Generative engine optimization vs answer engine optimization: both are about showing up in AI-era search, but they come from different places. Answer engine optimization grew out of featured snippets and voice search — being the answer. Generative engine optimization is about being cited and recommended when AI writes an answer. In the video below I show how I rank #1 in Google’s AI. Here’s the real difference, and why you should do both.

Key takeaways

  • AEO: be the direct answer — snippets, voice, AI Overviews.
  • GEO: be cited and recommended in generated AI answers.
  • They overlap heavily; the same pages can win both.
  • Do both by being the source, everywhere, and first.

Definitions

Term Stands for Goal
SEO Search engine optimisation Rank pages in search results
AEO Answer engine optimisation Be the direct answer — featured snippets, voice and AI Overviews
GEO Generative engine optimisation Be cited and recommended by generative AI like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity
AIO AI optimisation / AI Overviews optimisation Show up in AI-powered results, especially Google’s AI Overviews

Where each one came from

Answer engine optimization came first. As Google added featured snippets, “People also ask” boxes and voice assistants, SEOs started optimising to be the single answer read out or shown at the top — short, direct, well-structured answers to specific questions.

Generative engine optimization arrived with generative AI search — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google’s AI Mode. These engines write a new answer from several sources and often name a short list of businesses. GEO is about being one of the sources they read and the names they recommend.

Generative engine optimization vs answer engine optimization: side by side

Answer engine optimization Generative engine optimization

Output One extracted answer A generated answer citing several sources
Winning format Short, direct answers to specific questions Answer-first pages plus authority across many sources
Key signals Structure, schema, clarity Mentions, consistency, real experience, freshness
How you measure it Snippet and AI Overview appearances Mentions and citations across AI engines

Where they overlap

In practice the overlap is huge. A page that answers the question in its first sentence, uses clear headings, tables and FAQs, has schema and is built on real experience will tend to win featured snippets, appear in AI Overviews and get cited by generative engines. The difference is mostly emphasis: AEO leans on structure; GEO adds the need for your brand to be widely and consistently named across the web.

How I do both

Move What it means How I do it
1. Be the source AI repeats what it reads, so be what it reads A real case study or experiment in every page
2. Be everywhere Several sources saying the same thing Multiple sites, a community and a subreddit, each with its own angle
3. Be first The first good page on a new topic wins Publish within 24 hours of a new tool or trend

Every one of my GEO examples — from “best GEO expert” to “best HARO agency” — came from these moves, and they win AEO placements too.

Which should your business focus on?

Don’t choose. Start with AEO basics on your money pages — answer-first, FAQs, schema — because they’re quick wins. Then layer on GEO: case studies, multiple sources pointing to you, and fast publishing on new topics.

One rule you can’t skip: on 1 October 2026 Google updated its guidance on AI-generated content to say manual fact-checking before publishing is critical — covering the page text, titles, meta descriptions, structured data and even image alt text — because AI models predict words rather than look up facts. That’s why every page I publish is built on real experience and checked before it goes live.

Example: one page winning both

My “best HARO agency” page is a good example. It answers the question in the first sentence and uses a clear comparison table — classic AEO — and it’s backed by real experience and supported by other pages naming us — classic GEO. The result: it ranks number one organically, and Google’s AI Overview lists five suppliers and links out to us first. One page, both wins.

How to explain the difference to clients

The simplest way I’ve found: AEO makes you the answer to a question; GEO makes you the name an AI recommends. AEO is about the page; GEO is about the page plus your reputation across the web. Clients usually care about the outcome — being the business AI suggests — so I recommend doing both and reporting on both.

Where both are heading

As AI answers become the default way people search, the line between AEO and GEO is blurring. Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode are both answer engines and generative engines at once. The practical takeaway: build pages that are the best, clearest answer, backed by real experience, and make sure your brand is consistently named across the web. That wins today and whatever the next format is.

Quick definitions to remember

Answer engine optimization: make your page the clearest, most direct answer. Generative engine optimization: make your brand the one AI engines choose to cite and recommend. Do the first on every page and the second across the web, and you cover both.

The bottom line

In generative engine optimization vs answer engine optimization, AEO makes you the answer and GEO makes you the recommendation. Do both with the same pages. Claim a free strategy session to see where you stand in each.
