Grok Bot Mac support is full: the desktop app runs on macOS on both Apple silicon and Intel, installs from a .dmg, and updates itself. But the part most people miss is that your Mac isn’t where the work happens. Your Bots run on their own cloud computer, and the Mac app is where you chat, review and approve. In the video below I walk through Grok Bot from setup to real automations. Here’s how to install it on a Mac and set it up properly, straight from xAI’s docs.
Key takeaways
- Runs on macOS, Apple silicon and Intel, as a .dmg.
- Download from x.ai/bot and sign in with your Cursor account.
- Bots work on a cloud computer, not your Mac.
- Running commands on your Mac is Ask every time by default.

Does Grok Bot work on Mac?
Yes. The get started guide says the desktop app runs on macOS (Apple silicon and Intel), Windows and Linux, and checks for updates automatically. The deployment guide lists the macOS installer as a .dmg for both chip types.
Grok Bot is included with the Premium, Super and Ultra plans on The X Subscription, according to the overview. It also works on iPhone, iPad and Android, and the same Bots and conversations sync across every signed-in device.
How to install Grok Bot on a Mac
- Download the app from x.ai/bot. On a team, the Download Grok Bot row on the dashboard installs it or copies a link.
- Install it from the .dmg.
- Sign in. Choose Sign in and finish in your browser. Grok Bot uses your Cursor account; there’s no separate Grok Bot login, and company SSO works as normal.
- Link your plan if asked. If your access comes from SuperGrok or X Premium+, link it when the app asks. On desktop, Settings → Usage & Billing offers Get Access with Grok.
- Meet your first Bot. After a short intro, Grok Bot sets up a Bot called Grok Bot and opens a chat with it.
Then give it a first task. The docs recommend stating the outcome, the sources that matter, the constraints and the deliverable.

Apple silicon vs Intel Macs
Both are supported, with separate builds. The deployment guide’s release feeds name them darwin-arm64 (Apple silicon) and darwin-x64 (Intel).
If you installed the wrong one, Grok Bot now helps. The v0.78.1 changelog (27 October 2026) says that on an Apple silicon Mac, the Intel version of Grok Bot offers to download the Apple silicon version. Take it, because the native build is the one built for your chip.
Your Mac is not the Bot’s computer
The computer and apps guide is clear: the Grok Bot cloud computer is separate from the Mac in front of you. All your Bots share one persistent cloud computer with a browser, files and a terminal. The deployment guide adds that the hosted computer runs Linux in the cloud. A Bot’s cloud work can carry on even when the desktop app is disconnected.
Letting a Bot run commands on your Mac is a separate setting. In Settings → Computer → Your computer, Execution on this computer can be Ask every time, Always allow or Never allow. The default is Ask every time, and the approvals guide recommends Never allow unless a Bot has a specific reason to work on your local files.
Route traffic through your Mac
Some websites block datacenter IP addresses. For those, the settings guide offers Route traffic through this computer under Your computer. Turn it on and the Bot’s web traffic goes through your Mac, so sites see your Mac’s IP address.
- It applies to new connections and works while the desktop app is open.
- Only one of your computers routes at a time.
- Sites that resolve to a private or VPN address are blocked unless your organisation allows them.
- On Enterprise, an admin can turn it off with Allow Local Egress Routing.

Mac shortcuts worth learning
From the keyboard shortcuts list (use Cmd on macOS):

|---|---|
| Search palette | Cmd+K |
| New Bot | Cmd+N |
| New group chat | Cmd+Shift+N |
| Dictate | Cmd+D |
| Settings | Cmd+, |
| Conversation details | Cmd+Shift+I or Cmd+Alt+B |
| All shortcuts | Cmd+/ |
| Full screen | Control+Cmd+F |
Updates and fixes on a Mac
- Updates are automatic. The app offers each new version and Restart to Update installs it. You can turn off Automatic Updates, but not update checks.
- Update required appears when your version is more than 14 days old and a newer one is out. Your Bots keep running in the cloud while you update.
- App stuck? Fully quit with Quit from the menu bar, not just closing the window, then reopen it.
- Send feedback from Help → Send Feedback in the menu bar.
- Security keys are supported on Mac under Settings → General → Security Key.
While you’re using the Mac app, notifications from your Bots go to the desktop instead of your phone, and the dock badge shows unread activity.
Rolling Grok Bot out to a team’s Macs
For a business with several Macs, the deployment guide says to deploy the .dmg with the Mac management tool you already run, such as Jamf Pro, Kandji or Microsoft Intune. Pin the version you tested and deploy from your own copy. Your device management reaches the app on each Mac and stops there: it doesn’t reach the hosted cloud computer.
My verdict
Grok Bot on a Mac is simple: install the right build for your chip, sign in, and treat the Mac app as your control room. Set Execution on this computer to Never allow unless you need local work, and let the cloud computer do the heavy lifting.
