Grok Bot Windows support is full: the desktop app runs on Windows x64 and Arm64, installs from a Setup .exe, and keeps itself up to date. As with the Mac app, your PC isn’t where the work happens. Bots run on their own cloud computer, and the Windows app is where you chat, review and approve. Below is how to install it, the local-access setting you should check first, how updates work, the shortcuts, and how IT teams roll it out silently, all from xAI’s official docs. My video is right under this intro.
Key takeaways
- Runs on Windows x64 and Arm64, as a Setup .exe.
- Installs per user under
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs. - Bots work on a cloud computer, not your PC.
- Running commands on your PC is Ask every time by default.

How to install Grok Bot on Windows
The Get Started guide says the desktop app runs on Windows (x64 and Arm64) and checks for updates on its own. Get the installer from any of these:
- x.ai/bot
- The Download Grok Bot row on the Grok Bot dashboard page
- The download page, which lists the current installer for every platform
Run the Setup .exe, choose Sign in and finish sign-in in your browser. Grok Bot uses your Cursor account; there’s no separate login. Your first Bot, named Grok Bot, is set up after a short intro.
The installer works per user: it installs into your profile under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs, so you don’t need admin rights for a normal install.
Your PC vs the Bot’s cloud computer
This is the part most people get wrong. Per the deployment guide, Bots do their work on a hosted computer in the cloud, one per member, running Linux. The Windows app is a client for chat, review and approvals.
That’s why closing your laptop doesn’t stop a routine, and why files that exist only on your Windows machine aren’t covered by the Bot computer’s backups. The computer and apps guide says to keep your own backups for those.

Check this setting first: local access
A Bot can only run commands on your own PC when that’s enabled and you approve it. In Settings → Computer → Your computer, set Execution on this computer to:
- Ask every time (the default): approve each command.
- Always allow: no prompts.
- Never allow: Bots can’t touch your PC.
The approvals and security page recommends Never allow unless a Bot has a specific reason to work on your local files. Your team admin can cap this for everyone; the stricter rule wins. None of these settings stop the Bot from using its cloud computer.
Sign-ins, Windows Hello and security keys
The Bot’s browser runs on the cloud computer, so some sign-in methods don’t carry over. The troubleshooting guide says Windows Hello, fingerprint, Face ID and passkeys saved on your laptop don’t work on the Bot’s computer. Instead, choose Take over, sign in with a method your company allows there, then I’m done.
Windows does get one extra: hardware security keys such as a YubiKey. With Use hardware security keys on under Settings → General → Security Key (on by default on Windows), the Bot’s browser can use a key plugged into your PC, and every use asks for your approval. For passwords, use Vault or a Secure Form, never ordinary chat.
Updates and the “Update required” screen
The Windows app updates itself. In Settings → Updates you’ll find Check for Updates and Restart to Update. Automatic Updates is on by default: a downloaded update installs while you’re away (screen locked or idle for 10+ minutes and Grok Bot not busy).
Don’t fall behind. The troubleshooting guide says Grok Bot requires an update when your version is more than 14 days old and a newer one is out, and covers the window with Update required. Your Bots keep running in the cloud while you update. Updating the app doesn’t reset the cloud computer; that’s a separate Update Bot’s Computer button.

Windows keyboard shortcuts
On Windows use Ctrl wherever the Mac uses Cmd. The ones I use most, from the chat and collaboration docs:
| Action | Shortcut |
|---|---|
| Search palette | Ctrl+K |
| New Bot | Ctrl+N |
| New group chat | Ctrl+Shift+N |
| Dictate into the composer | Ctrl+D |
| Connect apps | Ctrl+Shift+M |
| Conversation details | Ctrl+Alt+B |
| Send from anywhere | Ctrl+Enter |
| All shortcuts | Ctrl+/ |
| Fullscreen | F11 |
While you’re using the desktop app on Windows, notifications from your own Bots go to the desktop instead of your phone. If a Bot needs input and you don’t open it, your phone gets a nudge about 3 minutes later.
Silent install for IT teams
The deployment guide covers fleets. On Windows, push the Setup .exe with Intune, Configuration Manager or another distribution tool and install silently:
Grok_Bot_{version}_Setup.exe /S
Deploy it in user context, not as SYSTEM, because it installs per user. Versioned URLs follow this pattern for x64 (swap in win32-arm64 for Arm):
https://downloads.cursor.com/grokbot/stable/win32-x64/{version}/Grok_Bot_{version}_Setup.exe
There’s no MSI; wrap the .exe if your tool needs one. Pilot it on a few devices first, and remember there’s no admin switch to turn off app updates on Windows.
My verdict
Install it, set local execution to Never allow unless you need it, turn on security keys if your company uses them, and keep Automatic Updates on. Then let the cloud computer do the work while your PC stays free. That’s how to get the most out of Grok Bot Windows.

FAQ: grok bot windows
Does Grok Bot work on Windows?
Yes. The Grok Bot desktop app runs on Windows x64 and Arm64 and installs from a Setup .exe downloaded from x.ai/bot or the Cursor download page.
Does Grok Bot run on Windows on Arm?
Yes. xAI’s docs list Windows Arm64 alongside x64, each with its own Setup .exe.
Do I need admin rights to install Grok Bot on Windows?
The installer installs per user, into your profile under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs, which is why IT teams are told to deploy it in user context rather than as SYSTEM.
Can Grok Bot control my Windows PC?
Only if you allow it. Execution on this computer defaults to Ask every time, and you can set Never allow. Bots normally work on their own cloud computer.
Does Windows Hello work with Grok Bot?
Windows Hello and passkeys saved on your PC don’t work on the Bot’s cloud computer. Take over and sign in another way, or use a hardware security key, which is supported on Windows.
How do I install Grok Bot silently on Windows?
Push the Setup .exe with Intune or Configuration Manager and run it with /S, in user context rather than as SYSTEM.
