GEO is getting cited inside AI answers, not just ranking blue links — and it’s mostly the same job done consistently. Here’s what AI engines need from a page, and why running it as a Claude skill beats doing it by hand.

Short answer

  • GEO means getting quoted in AI answers; the requirements overlap heavily with SEO.
  • AI engines want a direct short answer up top, schema, real FAQs, clear entities and genuine sourcing.
  • You don’t need separate content — you need to stop skipping the details on most pages.
  • A skill delivers that consistently; humans stop by article forty.

GEO and SEO are now the same job

GEO — generative engine optimisation — is getting your pages cited inside AI answers rather than only in blue links. AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity.

People are treating this as a separate discipline needing separate content. It isn’t. The things that get you quoted by an AI engine are mostly the things that were always good SEO, done properly and consistently: clear structure, real sourcing, machine-readable markup, and answers stated plainly enough to lift.

Which is why one skill can cover both — and why a skill is the right tool for it. GEO rewards consistency on fiddly details across every page, and that’s precisely what humans stop doing by article forty.

Why take my word for it:

What AI engines need from a page

If you want to be the sentence an AI quotes, give it something quotable.

A direct answer near the top

Every article my skill writes opens with a short-answer block that states the answer plainly before any build-up. That’s the block most likely to get lifted into an AI response.

Schema on every post

Article and FAQ JSON-LD ship automatically. Structured data tells a machine what the page is, who wrote it and what questions it answers, without the model having to infer it from prose.

Real FAQ blocks with real questions

Four to six genuine questions with direct answers. AI engines assemble responses from question-shaped content, so a page with proper FAQs gives them far more to work with.

Facts that came from somewhere

The skill refuses to write without a real source, so every specific claim traces back to something. Invented specifics are the fastest way to get contradicted by an engine that checked.

Clear entities and attribution

Named author, named business, consistent details across the network. AI engines are entity-driven — they need to know who is making the claim before they’ll repeat it.

Tables for comparisons

Comparison tables are unusually easy for a model to extract and reuse. Any “versus” or “best of” page gets one automatically.

Blue links versus AI answers

Classic SEO GEO
Win the click Win the citation
Rank the URL Get the sentence quoted
Keywords and backlinks Entities, structure and sourcing
Title earns the click Short answer earns the lift
Measured in positions Measured in mentions and referrals

The overlap is large, and that’s the good news. You don’t need a second content operation — you need your existing one to stop skipping schema, answer blocks and sourcing.

Why a skill beats doing this by hand

GEO is death by small details. Schema on every post. A short-answer block every time. FAQs that are real questions. Consistent author and business entities across every page. Tables where they fit.

None of it is hard. All of it gets skipped when you’re busy, and skipping it on eighty per cent of your pages means eighty per cent of your content is invisible to AI engines.

A skill doesn’t get bored. Article one hundred ships with the same markup as article one. That consistency is the GEO strategy.

How to measure it

  1. Ask the engines your own money questions and see whether you appear. Do it regularly, not once.
  2. Watch for referral traffic from AI assistants in your analytics — it shows up separately from search.
  3. Track branded search volume. Being cited in AI answers tends to lift people searching your name directly.
  4. Keep watching Search Console. Classic rankings and AI citations move together more often than not.

Be realistic: attribution here is genuinely messy and anyone quoting you precise GEO numbers is guessing. Track the direction, not a decimal place.

The skill itself is covered in my Claude AI SEO skill, the automation loop in the agentic SEO skill, and the comparison in best SEO skill for Claude. If you’d rather hand GEO to a team, my agency does this — book a free strategy session.

FAQ

What is GEO?

Generative engine optimisation — getting your content cited inside AI-generated answers such as AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, rather than only ranking as a blue link.

Can one Claude skill handle both SEO and GEO?

Yes, because the requirements overlap heavily. Short answers, schema, real FAQs, clear entities and genuine sourcing serve both at once.

What’s the single highest-impact GEO change?

Put a direct short answer near the top of every page. That’s the block most likely to be lifted into an AI response.

Does schema actually matter for AI search?

It helps. Structured data states what the page is, who wrote it and what it answers, rather than making a model infer it from prose.

Do I need separate content for GEO?

No. You need your existing content to stop skipping the details — answer blocks, schema, FAQs and sourcing — on every page rather than some.

How do I know if it’s working?

Query the engines with your own money questions regularly, watch for AI referral traffic, and track branded search. Attribution is messy, so track direction rather than exact numbers.

Will GEO replace SEO?

Not on current evidence. The two overlap enough that doing the fundamentals properly serves both, which is why I wouldn’t run separate operations.

Why use a skill instead of doing it manually?

Because GEO is a long list of small consistent details, and consistency is exactly what people stop delivering once they’re busy.

The bottom line

Getting quoted by AI engines is the same job as ranking, done consistently on the details people skip: a direct answer up top, schema on every post, real FAQs, clear entities and facts that came from a real source. Run that as a Claude skill and SEO and GEO stop being two jobs.
