Grok Bot is $200. It launched in public beta on 11 August 2026 and it is a paid product, not a free one.
There are a few routes in, and it’s worth knowing which apply to you before you go looking for a download that doesn’t exist.

It’s in beta on Mac, Windows, Linux and iPhone, with Android coming. And a bit of context that surprises people: after the July merger with SpaceX, the company now operates as SpaceX AI. Same Grok brand, same team behind it.
The free trial exists — and it doesn’t last
This is the part I’d want to know before getting excited about a free route in.
I signed up to the free trial as an existing Twitter subscriber. It ran out of tokens within about 20 minutes. Not 20 minutes of heavy use — just normal testing.
That’s not a knock on the product so much as a reality check on the word “free” here. Grok Bot gives every agent its own computer in the cloud, and cloud computer use burns tokens at a rate normal chat never does. A trial allowance disappears fast against that.
So if your plan was “I’ll use the free trial as my setup”, it won’t work. You’ll get a look at it and then you’ll be choosing between $200 and something else.

The genuinely free version: OpenMausBot
Here’s the good news. Within about a day of Grok Bot’s beta, a developer called Milind Soni built and released OpenMausBot — a free, open-source version of the same idea.
It doesn’t need a new subscription at all. It plugs into the AI tools you’re already logged into. If you use Claude, it uses your Claude. If you use Codex, it uses your Codex. It even works with Grok itself.
Open the two side by side and they look almost identical — a Telegram-style sidebar where every contact is an AI agent rather than a chatbot. Each one gets its own personality, its own job and its own connected apps.

What you need to run it
- A Mac. Download it from GitHub, drag it into Applications, open it — the server is built in. Windows, Linux and Ubuntu are coming.
- At least one AI tool already installed and logged in: Claude Code, Codex or Grok’s tool. Whatever you have appears in the model picker automatically.
- That’s it. The app itself is easy; the only fiddly bit is configuring the CLIs, and I got Claude Desktop to help me with that in a few minutes.
Worth knowing if you’ve looked at Hermes as the free option: you can’t use Claude with Hermes through the CLI, you need an API. With OpenMausBot you use Claude directly. If you’re already paying for Claude, that’s a genuine saving.

I’m not going to tell you the free version matches the paid one.

Two more things to be straight about. The approval prompts get annoying at volume — useful for safety, tiring in practice, though you can likely tune that. And it’s local-first, not local: your data lives on your machine, but Claude, Codex and Grok are still cloud models, so prompts do leave. This isn’t local-model privacy.
And one thing that’s true of both: computer use is slow. I watched Grok Bot get stuck trying to open Google and type a single word. The app connections are the genuinely useful part on either tool.
