Hermes Agent for accounting means letting Nous Research’s open-source agent do the reading, sorting and summarising behind your books, while you keep the final say on anything that moves money. Everything below comes from the official Hermes docs, the v0.23.0 release and the Nous-approved MCP catalog. My video is right under this intro. One note first: this is about workflow, not tax or financial advice, so keep your accountant in the loop.
Key takeaways
- Read PDFs, Word files and Excel workbooks with document extraction.
- Connect Stripe, PayPal or Square through Nous-approved MCP entries.
- Block risky tools like refunds, and make every write ask first.
- Schedule a weekly money summary with cron.

Why use Hermes for accounting work
Most bookkeeping time isn’t judgement. It’s opening files, copying numbers, chasing missing receipts and writing the same summary every week. Hermes runs on your own machine or server, keeps memory between sessions and can work on a schedule, so it can take that admin off your plate.
The judgement stays with you. Treat the agent as a fast junior who prepares the work, then you or your accountant check and sign off. For the wider picture, see the Hermes Agent for business guide.
1. Read invoices, statements and spreadsheets
The document extraction docs say the read_file tool turns common formats into readable text. Word and Excel files work out of the box, and PDFs use an optional converter that installs on first use where installs are allowed.
Example prompt: “Read every invoice PDF in this folder, list supplier, date, invoice number and total, and flag any duplicates.”

2. Pull payment data from Stripe, PayPal and Square
The v0.23.0 repo has Nous-approved MCP catalog entries for Stripe (payments, customers and invoices), PayPal (payments, invoices and subscriptions) and Square (catalog, orders and payments). Each one is the vendor’s own hosted MCP server, signed in with OAuth.
There’s no QuickBooks or Xero entry in the catalog, so don’t expect a ready-made connector for those. You can still export reports from your accounting tool and let Hermes read the files.
3. Make it safe before it touches money
The MCP docs show a Stripe example that removes dangerous tools with exclude: [delete_customer, refund_payment]. The MCP config reference adds a trust: untrusted setting: on that server, every write-capable call needs your approval first.
- Exclude refunds, deletes and anything that sends money.
- Mark payment servers as untrusted so writes always ask.
- Keep API keys in the credential vault, not in prompts.
v0.23.0 also lets paid MCP tools declare a cost, and Hermes asks before a chat goes over its spend limit.
4. Weekly and month-end summaries
The cron docs show jobs can run on a schedule, attach skills and deliver results to a chat, local files or another platform.
- Monday: last week’s failed payments and the common reasons.
- Month end: a list of unpaid invoices for you to chase.
- Daily: new receipts in a folder, sorted and named.
The google-workspace skill also covers Gmail, Drive and Sheets, so summaries can land where your team already works.

5. Your bookkeeping rules as a skill
Skills are instruction documents stored in ~/.hermes/skills/. Write your chart of accounts, naming rules and month-end checklist once, and Hermes follows them every time.
For bigger jobs, delegation splits work across subagents, for example one per supplier or per month.
6. Keep a human sign-off
Let Hermes prepare, sort and summarise. Then you or your accountant review before anything is filed, paid, refunded or sent to a client. Never let an agent make tax decisions on its own.
My verdict
Start with one read-only job: a weekly summary of payments and unpaid invoices, with write tools turned off. When the numbers match your books, add more. That’s the safe way to use Hermes Agent for accounting.

FAQ: hermes agent for accounting
What can Hermes Agent do for accounting?
It can read invoices, statements and spreadsheets, pull data from Stripe, PayPal or Square through Nous-approved MCP entries, and send scheduled summaries. You keep the sign-off.
Does Hermes connect to QuickBooks or Xero?
Not through the Nous-approved catalog in v0.23.0. You can export reports from those tools and let Hermes read the files.
Can Hermes read PDF invoices?
Yes. The read_file tool converts PDFs to text through an optional converter that installs on first use, and Word and Excel files work out of the box.
How do I stop Hermes issuing refunds?
Exclude risky tools in the MCP config, as the Stripe example does with delete_customer and refund_payment, and mark the server trust: untrusted so every write asks first.
Can Hermes send me a weekly money summary?
Yes. A cron job can run on a schedule and deliver the summary to your chat, local files or another platform.
Can Hermes do my taxes?
No. Use it to prepare and organise records, and leave tax decisions to you and a qualified accountant.
