Hermes Agent robot setups are here. The Autonomous Lamp is a desk-lamp robot that gives AI agents like Hermes a physical body: it moves, looks at you, listens and talks back. Autonomous announced it with one line — Hermes “just escaped” and got “a body, one eye, and two ears”. In the video below I show what it does, how it works under the hood and what you can build with it. Here’s everything you need to know before you put Hermes on your desk.

Key takeaways

  • The Autonomous Lamp gives Hermes a camera, microphones, speakers and five motors.
  • It runs Hermes, Claude Code, Codex, OpenClaw, OpenCode and more, with cloud or local models.
  • Behaviour lives in simple files: SOUL.md, SAFETY.md and SKILL.md.
  • Lamp costs $999. Claim a free strategy session to plan your agent setup.

What is the Hermes Agent robot?

Agents like Hermes and Claude Code live in a terminal window. They’re powerful, but they’re stuck on a screen. The Autonomous Lamp takes the same agents and puts them on your desk. Autonomous calls it your personal robot. When you walk in it can look up, turn towards you when you talk, and answer out loud.

It ships with Autonomous’s open-source Physical AI Operating System, often called lampOS. Autonomous describes it as “the Android for physical AI agents”. It sits between your agent and the hardware — camera, microphones, speakers, motors and light. Your agent asks for something, and the OS makes the hardware do it.

Autonomous Lamp at a glance
Price $999 (bulk pricing from $969 for 3+ units)
Size and weight 7.87 × 7.87 × 18.43 in, 6.6 lb
Movement 5 position-feedback servos: turn, tilt, nod and lean
Vision Wide-angle camera with face tracking and motion sensing
Audio Microphone array and stereo speakers
Compute 8-core ARM64 CPU, 6 GB RAM
Software Open-source Physical AI Operating System (lampOS), Apache 2.0
Warranty 1 year

Which agents run on the robot?

You’re not locked into one agent or one model. Autonomous lists Hermes, Claude Code, Codex, OpenClaw, OpenCode and PicoClaw (its product page also mentions Pi), with more on the way. You can use a cloud model from the provider you pick, or a compatible local model running on your own hardware.

So the Hermes you already use — with its memory, skills and scheduled jobs — can now have a voice and a body. Hermes is also the first runtime the OS enables its intent routing for by default, while other runtimes wait for validation.

What it’s like to use

You just talk to it. It listens, answers and moves while it talks, so it feels like a character on your desk rather than a speaker. You pick its voice and shape how it behaves. In one of Autonomous’s own clips, two lamps chat with each other, each with its own personality.

  • Simple commands: “Turn off the lights”, “This lamp is too bright”, “You’re speaking too loudly” or “Make this lamp violet” run as local commands.
  • Lighting scenes: “I need light to read a book” switches on a reading scene.
  • Little nudges: Autonomous shows it reminding you to drink water, take breaks and fix your posture, and its ring light can change colour as a quiet cue.
  • Bigger jobs: anything it isn’t sure about goes to your main agent.

Under the hood: SOUL.md, SAFETY.md and skills

This is the part I like most. The OS can run any robot you can describe in four markdown files:

File What it controls
ROBOT.md The body: the board and the hardware it has
SOUL.md The self: who it is and how it talks
SAFETY.md The bounds: how fast, how bright, how late
SKILL.md The hands: one thing it can do

Change SOUL.md and it becomes someone else on the next turn. SAFETY.md is the safety gate: it sets limits like brightness, quiet hours and movement speed. Those limits apply no matter which AI model sent the request, so you can swap agents or models and the robot still stays inside your rules.

Every behaviour is a skill, and a skill is just a folder with a SKILL.md file inside — the same idea Hermes already uses. Install skills from the Skill Store in one tap, or type what you want in the app and it writes the skill for you. The OS ships with skills such as following an object with the camera and responding to touch with a gesture.

Work across your robot and your computer

  • Hand off computer work. The harness-use skill sends coding and research tasks to agents running in Autonomous’s Harness on your paired computer, then reads you the result.
  • Use Mac apps. The computer-use skill works through Autonomous Buddy, which bundles Cua Driver — the same driver behind Hermes computer use.
  • Smart home. You can connect it to Home Assistant, so the lamp becomes a talking, moving front end for your home.

Autonomous also suggests uses like a front-desk host, a co-host for creators and a robot for classrooms.

Other robots: Intern, Reachy Mini or your own

Robot What it is
Autonomous Lamp The full experience: sees, hears, speaks and moves
Autonomous Intern An always-on desk agent with a mic, speaker and LED ring
Reachy Mini Hugging Face’s desk robot, which can run the OS alongside its own software
Your own robot Describe it in ROBOT.md, SOUL.md, SAFETY.md and SKILL.md

Put a Reachy Mini next to a Lamp and each hears the other’s answer as its next input, so the two will hold a conversation until you stop them.

How to get started with a Hermes Agent robot

  • Add the robot in the Autonomous app (iOS or Android) and connect it to your Wi-Fi.
  • Pick your agent: Hermes, Claude Code, Codex or one of the others.
  • Choose its voice and shape its personality in SOUL.md.
  • Install a skill from the Skill Store, or describe a new one.
  • Set your limits in SAFETY.md so it behaves exactly how you want.

A robot with a camera and microphones is always sensing. Decide where it lives, set quiet hours, and check which model service your audio and video go to, since inference may run remotely depending on your setup.

Is it worth $999?

If you just want reminders and a talking lamp, probably not yet. If you run agents every day and want them present — greeting visitors, reading you results, co-hosting content or running your smart home — it’s the most complete Hermes body available right now. And because the OS is open source, you can try it on a Reachy Mini or your own hardware first.

My verdict on the Hermes Agent robot

Agents are leaving the screen. With an open OS, simple SOUL.md and SAFETY.md files, and support for the agents you already use, the Autonomous Lamp is a fun and genuinely useful first step into physical AI. If you want your agent on your desk and not just in your terminal, the Hermes Agent robot is worth a look.
