Hermes Linear turns Hermes Agent into a teammate that can read, sort and create issues in Linear, the project tracker a lot of software and product teams use. Hermes Agent v0.22 makes the connection simple: you can use the new Connectors feature or add Linear’s hosted MCP server from the built-in catalog. Once it’s connected, the useful part starts — triaging new issues, turning chats and scheduled checks into tickets, and writing project updates. This guide covers the setup, then the three Linear workflows I’d use first. Watch the video below, then follow along.
Key takeaways
- Connect with Connectors (sign in once) or the Linear MCP server at
mcp.linear.app/mcp. hermes mcp configure linearlets you choose which Linear tools Hermes may call.- Best uses: issue triage, issues from chats or cron jobs, and project updates.

What Hermes Linear does
Linear is built around issues, projects and cycles. Most of the admin around it is repetitive: reading new bug reports, adding labels, spotting duplicates, chasing status and writing updates. That’s exactly the kind of work an agent is good at.
With Hermes connected to Linear, you can ask in plain English for things like “show me every unassigned bug from this week” or “create an issue for the login error we just talked about”, and Hermes does it in Linear directly.
If you’ve read my Hermes Notion guide, the setup will feel familiar. The difference is the job: Notion is where Hermes writes knowledge; Linear is where Hermes moves work forward.
Setup option 1: Hermes Connectors
Hermes Agent v0.22.0 added Connectors, which let the agent act in hosted apps such as Linear and Notion through the Nous tool gateway. Ask Hermes to connect Linear, sign in once in your browser, and the Linear tools work in the same turn.
You don’t need an existing Nous account. Your first connection creates a free Nous identity that’s only used for connectors and managed tools. From the terminal, the same thing looks like this:
hermes connectors connect linear— sign in and connect.hermes connectors accounts linear— see which Linear accounts are connected.hermes connectors connect linear --alias client-a— add a second named account.hermes connectors disconnect linear— remove access.
Named accounts matter more for Linear than for most apps. If you work across more than one Linear workspace — say your own company and a client’s — each one gets its own alias, and the tools ask for a connector_alias, so issues never land in the wrong workspace.

Setup option 2: the Linear MCP server
Linear is also in Hermes’ MCP catalog, listed as Linear issue and project management with remote OAuth. The simplest way in is to ask in chat: “add the Linear MCP”. A setup card appears and walks you through it.
If you prefer the terminal, hermes mcp opens a picker, hermes mcp install linear adds the server and hermes mcp login linear runs the sign-in. The config Hermes writes is short:
mcp_servers:
linear:
url: "https://mcp.linear.app/mcp"
auth: oauth
Sign-in uses OAuth 2.1 with a local callback, and the token is stored in ~/.hermes/mcp-tokens/ with permissions only you can read.
The real reason to use MCP for Linear is hermes mcp configure linear. It opens a checklist of the server’s tools so you can pick what Hermes is allowed to call. In the docs’ example, tools like find_issues, get_issue and create_issue are ticked, while a destructive one like delete_workspace is left unticked. That’s the setting I’d care about most before letting an agent loose on a live tracker.

Workflow 1: Issue triage
Triage is where Hermes earns its keep. New issues come in from customers, support and the team, and someone has to read them, label them and decide who looks at them. Ask Hermes to do the first pass:
- Find new issues that have no labels or assignee.
- Read each one and suggest a label, a priority and a likely owner.
- Flag issues that look like duplicates of existing ones.
- Post a short summary so a human can approve the calls in one go.
Start with Hermes suggesting rather than changing. Once you trust its judgement, let it apply labels directly and keep assignment for a person.
Workflow 2: Create issues from chats and cron jobs
A lot of good tickets die in chat. Someone mentions a bug in a conversation, everyone agrees it should be fixed, and nobody logs it. With Hermes connected, you can say “make that a Linear issue” and it writes the title, the description and the steps to reproduce from the conversation it just had with you.
The second half is scheduled jobs. Hermes can run tasks on a schedule, which means it can check something regularly and open an issue when it finds a problem. For example: check a list of pages each morning and open an issue if one is down, or review error logs overnight and log anything new. Describe the job to Hermes in plain English and ask it to schedule it; hermes cron list shows what’s set up.
Workflow 3: Project updates
Writing status updates is the job everyone puts off. Hermes can read a project’s issues, see what moved to done, what’s blocked and what’s overdue, and draft the update for you.
Put this on a weekly schedule and you get a consistent Friday update without anyone writing it from scratch. Pair it with my Hermes Notion setup and Hermes can also save that update to a Notion page for people who don’t live in Linear.
Connectors or MCP for Linear?
| Connectors | Linear MCP server | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Ask Hermes or Connectors page, sign in once | Catalog, setup card or hermes mcp install |
| Multiple workspaces | Named accounts with –alias | One server entry per config |
| Tool control | Managed for you | Pick tools with hermes mcp configure |
| Best for | Getting started fast | Teams that want tight limits on what the agent can do |
Both are official routes. If you run separate Hermes profiles, each profile’s OAuth MCP connection is kept separate, so a test profile can’t act on your production Linear. For every app Connectors can reach, see my Hermes Agent Connectors guide.
My verdict on Hermes Linear
Linear is already fast; the slow part is the admin around it. Hermes handles that admin well: first-pass triage, tickets that would otherwise be forgotten, and updates nobody wants to write. Connect it with Connectors, lock down the tools with MCP if you need to, and start with triage. That’s where Hermes Linear pays off first.

FAQ: hermes linear
How do I connect Hermes to Linear?
Use Connectors in Hermes Agent v0.22 (ask Hermes to connect Linear or run hermes connectors connect linear, then sign in once), or add the Linear MCP server from the catalog with hermes mcp install linear.
What is the Linear MCP server URL for Hermes?
The Linear MCP server URL is https://mcp.linear.app/mcp, with auth set to oauth in the mcp_servers section of your Hermes config.
Can I stop Hermes deleting things in Linear?
Yes. Run hermes mcp configure linear and untick any tools you don’t want Hermes to call. Destructive tools such as delete_workspace start unticked in the docs’ example.
Can Hermes create Linear issues automatically?
Yes. Hermes can create issues from a conversation when you ask, and it can run scheduled jobs that check something and open an issue when it finds a problem.
Can Hermes work with more than one Linear workspace?
Yes. With Connectors, add each workspace as a named account using –alias, and Hermes picks the right one through connector_alias.
