Generative engine optimization vs AIO is confusing because “AIO” means two things. Some people use it for AI optimization — a catch-all for optimising for any AI search. Others mean AI Overviews optimization — showing up in Google’s AI Overviews specifically. In the video below I cover Google’s latest AI guidance. Here’s how each meaning compares with GEO and what to actually do.

Key takeaways

  • AIO can mean AI optimization (broad) or AI Overviews optimization (Google).
  • GEO covers all generative engines — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI.
  • AI Overviews optimization is a subset of GEO.
  • The same three moves win all of them.

The two meanings of AIO

Meaning Scope Compared with GEO
AI optimization Optimising for AI search in general Basically a synonym for GEO and AEO combined
AI Overviews optimization Showing up in Google’s AI Overviews (and AI Mode) One part of GEO, focused on Google
Term Stands for Goal
SEO Search engine optimisation Rank pages in search results
AEO Answer engine optimisation Be the direct answer — featured snippets, voice and AI Overviews
GEO Generative engine optimisation Be cited and recommended by generative AI like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity
AIO AI optimisation / AI Overviews optimisation Show up in AI-powered results, especially Google’s AI Overviews

Generative engine optimization vs AI Overviews optimization

Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode are generative engines, so optimising for them is GEO — just aimed at one platform. Because they draw on Google’s own results, ranking well in Google matters even more here. GEO takes a wider view, aiming for ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude too.

How to win Google AI Overviews

  • Rank on page one for the question — AI Overviews lean on top results.
  • Answer in the first sentence and use clear structure.
  • Add FAQs and schema.
  • Have several of your pages, or sources naming you, in the results — my “best GEO expert” result cites several of my pages.
  • Fact-check everything, including titles, schema and alt text.

One rule you can’t skip: on 1 October 2026 Google updated its guidance on AI-generated content to say manual fact-checking before publishing is critical — covering the page text, titles, meta descriptions, structured data and even image alt text — because AI models predict words rather than look up facts. That’s why every page I publish is built on real experience and checked before it goes live.

How GEO goes further

Move What it means How I do it
1. Be the source AI repeats what it reads, so be what it reads A real case study or experiment in every page
2. Be everywhere Several sources saying the same thing Multiple sites, a community and a subreddit, each with its own angle
3. Be first The first good page on a new topic wins Publish within 24 hours of a new tool or trend

Being everywhere matters beyond Google: our subreddit, community and multiple sites mean ChatGPT and Perplexity find us too. Perplexity lists me several times in its GEO expert recommendations.

Real results across AIO and GEO

  • Google’s AI Overview and AI Mode name me first for “best GEO expert” — and cite several of my pages.
  • The AI Profit Boardroom ranks #1 in Google’s AI for “best AI community”, cited twice.
  • One site went from zero to 1,300 Google clicks a day, with over 9,600 AI impressions in a single day.
  • Perplexity lists me several times in its recommendations for GEO experts.

Which term should you use?

Use whichever your audience understands — but plan for all of it. Clients often say “AIO” when they mean “show up in Google’s AI”. Doing GEO properly covers that, plus every other AI engine your customers use.

AIO in client conversations

When a client asks for “AIO”, clarify what they mean. If they mean Google’s AI Overviews, focus first on ranking and answer-first structure for their money questions in Google. If they mean AI search in general, include ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude in the plan. Either way, report on both rankings and AI mentions so they can see progress.

Tracking AI Overviews

Search Console doesn’t break out AI Overview traffic cleanly, so track it directly: search your target questions, note whether an AI Overview appears and whether you’re cited, and log it monthly. One site of mine logged over 9,600 impressions inside Google’s AI features in a single day — a sign of how much visibility these features can drive.

A simple plan covering AIO and GEO

Month one: fix structure on your money pages and make sure they rank in Google — that covers AI Overviews. Month two: add case studies and FAQs, and publish supporting pages across other sites and communities — that covers ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude. Month three: re-test every engine, keep what worked and publish on fresh topics. Three months of that and you’ll see your brand appearing in AI answers far more often.

The short version

Whatever you call it — AIO, GEO or AEO — the work is the same: rank for the right questions, write answer-first pages built on real experience, and get your brand named across trusted sources. Do that consistently and you’ll show up in Google’s AI Overviews and the other AI engines your customers use.

The bottom line

In generative engine optimization vs AIO, AIO is either a broad synonym or the Google-only slice of GEO. Optimise for all generative engines and you win AI Overviews along the way. Claim a free strategy session to see how you show up in each.
