Grok 4.6 quietly turned Grok into a search engine that answers questions with sources — and almost nobody is competing for those rankings yet. Here’s the exact four-step system, with real keywords and real first-page results from the last 24 hours.

Short answer

  • Grok now searches the web and cites websites — a whole new set of rankings, barely contested.
  • A keyword trending on X hit page one of Google in multiple slots within 24 hours.
  • Grok cited our sites three times in a single answer.
  • It picks up new content faster than ChatGPT — hours, not months.

Grok is a search engine now

Grok 4.6 was announced as a frontier model for coding and agentic tasks. That framing is a mistake, and it’s the reason this opportunity exists.

Its real strength is knowledge work — research, finding things, reading the web, answering questions with sources. Which is exactly what happens when someone types a question into Grok instead of Google.

People search it, it searches the web, and it answers with sources. Those sources are websites. Websites like yours.

So there is a brand new set of rankings forming right now — the rankings inside Grok’s answers — and almost nobody is competing for them yet.

The proof, from the last 24 hours

I don’t want to talk theory, so here’s what actually happened.

I found a keyword trending on X itself: “Grok Bot vs Hermes agent”. Days old. Nobody had content for it because the topic barely existed.

I built content around that exact keyword across several platforms, indexed it, and within 24 hours it was on the first page of Google multiple times over:

  • A full comparison post on one blog — ranked.
  • A hands-on comparison on a second site we own — ranked.
  • Two videos on the topic — both showed up in video results.
  • A discussion thread in a community space — showed up in the forum section.

One search, one keyword, our content filling different slots on the same page.

Then I asked Grok the same question people were asking. It searched the web for about 19 seconds and wrote a full comparison — overview, head-to-head table, who should pick what — and cited its sources. It pulled from juliangoldie.co.uk twice in one answer, and also cited another of our sites. Three citations in a single Grok answer about a hot new topic.

The 4-step system

Step 1: find trending keywords with X and Grok

Google Trends is slow. Keyword tools are slower — most data you’re looking at is weeks or months old. Grok is connected to X, so it sees conversations as they happen, which makes it one of the best trending-topic finders available right now.

Ask Grok what topics are heating up in your industry this week. New tools, new comparisons, new questions people have just started asking. You want keywords so new that nobody has answered them properly yet.

Step 2: create content across multiple platforms

This is the part people skip. Don’t make one piece — make several, on the same keyword, in different formats.

Google’s first page has separate slots for regular results, videos and forum discussions. Each format competes for a different slot, so a post, a second angle on another site, a video and a community thread can occupy four positions on one page.

There’s a second reason too. When I ranked inside Grok, it cited a site that isn’t especially powerful in Google. Different AI engines value different platforms differently, so posting the same topic to your sites, LinkedIn, Reddit, X and video gives you more ways to be the source. I call it the rank everywhere system.

Step 3: index fast

Publishing without indexing is like printing flyers and leaving them in your garage. Indexing just means telling search engines the page exists — and normally you publish and wait days or weeks for Google to find it.

I use Indexceptional to speed that up massively. On trending keywords the window is small, so speed is the whole advantage.

Step 4: check both, then do it again

Search your keyword on Google. Ask Grok the question. See where you show up and which piece ranked best. Then repeat on the next trend.

None of those four steps require you to be technical.

What Grok actually cites

This is the part that should change how you write from today onwards.

When I looked at the pages Grok chose, they had something in common: they were honest, hands-on and specific. Case studies. Testimonials. Actual examples of me using both tools, with what worked and what didn’t.

That’s information gain — something new that isn’t already on every other page about the topic. AI engines are hunting for exactly that: specific industry knowledge and honest answers only a real person could produce.

Your real experience is now a ranking advantage. The things you know from actually doing the work are things generic content writers and generic AI don’t have.

Grok indexes faster than the others

Something that genuinely surprised me: Grok picked up our new content noticeably faster than ChatGPT did. We published, indexed, and Grok was already pulling those pages into answers while other AI search tools hadn’t noticed them.

Grok lives close to the live web because it’s built for fresh information. Which means the gap between “you publish” and “you’re a source inside Grok” can be hours rather than months.

Old SEO Trending keywords + Grok
Write, then wait 3–9 months Publish today, check tomorrow
Test one topic at a time Test ten in the time old SEO tested one
Compete on crowded keywords Compete where there’s no queue yet
Guess what worked Rank or learn, within a day

Grok as the content engine too

There’s a neat loop here: the same model you’re trying to rank inside is also a strong tool for building the content.

The 500k context window means you can feed it everything on a topic — your notes, the pages you’re comparing, the trending conversation — and ask for a genuinely complete answer. And because its real strength is knowledge work, research-heavy formats like comparisons, reviews and guides are exactly what it’s built for. Which happens to be exactly what AI search engines love to cite.

Personally I still prefer Claude for the writing itself, mostly because the harness is better and it’s easier to use. But there’s no problem using Grok 4.6 to create the content — as long as you quality-control it properly.

The objections

  • “This sounds technical.” It isn’t. Find keywords, create content, index them, check rankings, repeat.
  • “SEO is over because of AI.” The opposite. It’s easier than ever to create content, across more platforms, more often — which is exactly what this method needs.
  • “Ranking takes months.” On old crowded keywords, sure. On trending keywords nobody has covered, the results came in 24 hours. When you compete where nobody else is competing yet, there is no queue.
  • “I’m too late.” These rankings formed days ago. Everyone is at the same starting line.

FAQ

Can you rank inside Grok?

Yes. Grok searches the web and cites its sources, so your pages can appear inside its answers. We had three citations from our sites in a single Grok answer within 24 hours of publishing.

How fast can you rank on a trending keyword?

We went from publishing to first-page Google results in multiple slots within 24 hours, on a keyword that was only days old.

Why is Grok good for finding keywords?

It’s connected to X, so it sees conversations as they happen. Google Trends and keyword tools show you data that’s weeks or months old.

What content does Grok cite?

Honest, hands-on, specific pages — case studies, testimonials, real examples with real results. Information gain, not generic summaries.

Does Grok index faster than ChatGPT?

In our testing, clearly yes. Grok was pulling our new pages into answers while other AI search tools hadn’t picked them up.

Why publish on multiple platforms?

Google’s first page has separate slots for results, videos and forum discussions, and different AI engines value different platforms. More formats means more ways to be the source.

Do I need to index my content?

It’s the step that makes the speed possible. On trending keywords the window is small, so getting crawled quickly is the whole advantage.

Can I use Grok to write the content too?

Yes — its 500k context and knowledge-work strength suit comparisons, reviews and guides. Quality-control it, and note I still prefer Claude for the writing itself.

The bottom line

Grok SEO is a genuinely new set of rankings with almost nobody competing for them. Find a keyword trending on X, publish across several formats the same day, index it fast, and check both Google and Grok tomorrow. The answers Grok gives next week are being written by someone today — make sure it’s you.
