In this article, I’ll discuss some of the best link building strategies to get backlinks to your website.
These are the proven, tried and tested link building strategies that I’ve used to build thousands of backlinks.
So if you want to boost your rankings, and drive more traffic to your site, keep reading…
Strategy #1: The Skyscraper Technique
The first link building strategy I recommend is the Skyscraper Technique:
This is a scalable way to get backlinks to your website fast, and it still works today.
I’ve worked on 100+ skyscraper campaigns – it’s a very reliable link building technique.
So how do you get started?
Look at your competitor’s most linked content and create something very similar.
It must be more of the following VS your competitors:
Replicate your competitor’s content – but make it 10X BETTER.
Next up, it’s time do the outreach:
Reach out to everyone who linked to your competitors.
(I usually use cold email outreach for this.)
Your email will look a bit like this:
“Hey, I noticed you linked to joeblogs.com, that’s a great website.
“It actually inspired me to create something similar.
Here’s the URL – do you want to link to it?””
It’s as simple as that.
The skyscraper technique is a very scalable way to get links to your website fast.
…Plus this works for almost any niche.
Why is the skyscraper technique so powerful?
Because you’re building very natural links, editorial links.
When does the skyscraper technique fail?
If you’re in a very competitive niche:
e.g. gambling OR you’re targeting VERY high DR websites.
…Then outreach isn’t going to work.
Send your emails in volume.
You can’t just send 10-20 emails using the Skyscraper Technique.
You need to send far more emails…
You might have to send 100 emails before you get 1 link back.
Strategy #2: Win-Win Link Building
Next up, try offering a social media share or a link back in exchange for a link to your website.
Be careful because Google’s Webmaster Guidelines state that you can’t use:
“Excessive link exchanges (“Link to me and I’ll link to you”) or partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking.“
So do this in moderation:
It’s still a very effective strategy when used with caution.
Ahref’s study proves that reciprocal link building can still boost your rankings.
Why choose this technique VS the Skyscraper Technique?
Reciprocal link building is more win-win VS the skyscraper technique.
It focuses on building a relationship with the webmaster because you’re offering value.
What are the disadvantages of this technique?
You need a respectable social media following if you’re going to offer this as a link building bargaining chip.
Also, be careful how many times you do this.
You cannot do this excessively!
Guest posting is another strong link building strategy.
It still works in 2020 (but it’s more time-consuming too)!
How does this work?
- Create a list of high authority websites in your niche
- Contact them
- Offer them a guest blog in exchange for a link back to your site.
Most webmasters are paying $200-$300 for a decent article.
So if you can offer a free guest blog, then that’s very valuable for them.
Unlike the Skyscraper Technique, you’re offering a win-win deal with free content.
Why choose guest blogging VS other link building techniques?
The beauty of this technique is you can get links to your money pages.
When you’re using the Skyscraper Technique, you only get links to your content.
That’s not quite as valuable as getting links to your money pages/review pages.
But, guest blogging isn’t very scalable.
And personally I’m not a big fan (see this video!):
- If you’re writing the content yourself then it’s very time-consuming
- There’s no guarantee the webmaster will actually add it to the website
- The website may have revisions for your content
- There’s often a bit of back and forth between you and the website owner
The other problem is, it can take a few months to be published.
Here’s my recommendation:
Offer the skyscraper technique first.
If that doesn’t work, use guest blogging as a backup offer.
The other benefit of guest posting is that you can use it as social proof:
When you already have a few guest blogs posted, you can send that out to other webmasters that you’re pitching to and say:
“Hey, here’s the quality of my content. Other webmasters have loved it.
That’s why I think we’d be a great fit for a guest blog too.”
Strategy #4: Audio Link Building
Audio link building is an unusual strategy…
So how does it work?
This is where you reach out to webmasters, and offer an audio version of their blog.
In exchange, you get a link back.
This works by creating a list of high authority websites.
Then you reach out to them saying something like this:
Hey! I loved your last blog, that was amazing! In fact, I liked it so much that I created an audio version of it. I think this would benefit your blog in terms of making it more engaging and easier to consume. Where should I send the audio file?
Once they respond, you send the audio HTML code along with a credit underneath.
It might say “recorded by joeblogs.com” (with a link back to your homepage).
I’ve landed some VERY high-quality links using this:
Why does this technique work so well?
- It’s a very unusual link building technique
- This makes you stand out
- It’s more personalized and win-win VS other techniques
What are the disadvantages?
Mainly, recording audio isn’t very scalable.
This requires time and energy.
It might be your time – or it might be your employees.
But either way, it’s going to cost you time, money, and energy.
So you have to be productive with the resources you have.
And that’s why I only use this technique for high authority websites.
Avoid breaking copyright regulations:
If you’re recording an audio version of another site’s blog, you need their permission.
Do not record any audio until you have the permission of the webmaster.
Strategy #5: Networking
The final link building strategy that I recommend is networking.
For the most effective link building strategies, watch the video below…
It’s old school, but offline link building works well.
Where can you do this?
- Any networking events in your industry/niche
Networking creates opportunities:
A one-to-one personal relationship demonstrates trust and credibility.
So how can you build strong relationships with website owners?
One of the best ways to do that is by meeting them one-to-one.
Link building conversion rates are far higher VS the skyscraper technique:
…Where you have to send a100 emails before you get 1 link back.
But what happens if you don’t have the time/money to attend events?
You can use LinkedIn/Facebook groups.
If you offer value, people will trust you.
And that’s going to net you more link building opportunities.
Networking can also lead to partnerships and affiliations too.
Now you know my top 5 link building strategies.
Just to recap, to get backlinks to your website fast, I recommend:
- Skyscraper Technique
- Reciprocal links (in moderation)
- Audio link building
- Guest posting
These are all extremely powerful ways to get links to your website fast.
