Therefore, if you ask a Webmaster for a link straight back to your sales page, most of them are probably going to say “no way! Not unless you pay me.”

HARO is an acronym for the website Help A Reporter Out. HARO is basically a marketplace where you can find loads of journalists who are looking for quotes from people like you.
In exchange for getting a quote from you about a certain topic, they will give you a free backlink to your sales page.
The other great thing about HARO is that it gives you free press coverage. You are getting free publicity for your services and your product. And all you have to do is answer a journalist’s query.
Signing up to use HARO
Once you are on the HARO homepage you will want to go to the sign-up link. When you have done this, you simply need to fill out the form with your details and click Sign Up.
Once you have signed up you will begin receiving daily emails from HARO. Each of these emails are an opportunity to get press coverage and free backlinks to your sales page.
Some of the biggest media outlets in the world are using HARO right now.
For example, companies like Reuters, Fox News, Mashable, and the Chicago Tribune. These are all powerful resources that you can potentially get a free backlink from, just by using HARO.
Choosing relevant articles to respond to
Once you start getting emails from HARO, you will get an email breakdown of various PR opportunities that you can start getting free backlinks from.
It is important to make sure that you are looking opportunities that are relevant to your niche.
For example, if I am trying to build backlinks to my site, maybe I am interested in Business and Finance. So, I will want to check out an article that sounds relevant to me.
Once you find an article that you want to reply to, you can click on it and see all of the details. These include the name of the journalist, their email address, topic category, media outlet, and the deadline for responding.
It is really important to note the deadline because obviously you need to respond before it expires. The clock is ticking, and you want to make sure you reply as soon as possible.
You review the query that the journalist has, and this helps you to consider what sort of response they are looking for.
Writing your compelling response
When you want to respond to a HARO query, you need to consider how to write a compelling response. You have to think about the specific details that the journalist is looking for in a reponse.
For example, the article might say that they are looking for a paragraph response from entrepreneurs and business owners on the “must-have skills” one needs to have to be a CEO.
So, what you can do is click on the Compose button in your email program. Copy the email address that is listed in the query and start your response.
When you reply, you want to make sure your reponse is super interesting. It should be unique, and stand out from everyone else you are competing with. This is something important to bear in mind before you start responding to HARO queries.
It might only take me about 30 seconds to do a simple email reply to a HARO journalist to get a backlink. The backlink could be DR 71, which is a particularly good authority website, and the backlink will go straight to my home page.
The reply should only be a few sentences, and not take you too long to write. It should be quite simple, and straight to the point. And that is how easy it is to get a backlink.
When I respond to a HARO query I also include a headshot at the bottom, a link to my website, and a little bit of information about me.
Whatever page you want to build links to, just make sure to include it in the website section, with a really good reply to the query.
In my experience it doesn’t take long to write this. It’s super short and simple, but that is the whole point. You should be able to scale this process very quickly.
When it comes to managing HARO responses, they are also quite easy to write. It doesn’t really take a rocket scientist to come up with answers for HARO.
Sustain and Grow your free backlinks
You can outsource this process fairly quickly if you decide to. If you are a website owner, are running a business, or you are a marketer, you probably don’t have time to answer HARO responses all day.
But, what you can do is outsource the job very quickly. You can do this by using a website such as UpWork. I have created a job using this website, and you can even steal the template if you want to.
I have got a very scalable process. It doesn’t cost me any time and I can hire an admin to do the HARO responses for me.
What I would recommend is using a bonus per link acquired metric. This incentivizes the person who is responding to HARO queries, by using a bonus scheme. And therefore, it is more like pay for performance.
Overall, I would recommend HARO as a fast, easy, and useful tool to get free backlinks to your sales page.
